PEP, post-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication meant to prevent or control the spread of an infection or disease. PEP for HIV is a prescription containing two medicines that are taken within 72 hours after a possible HIV exposure to prevent HIV infection. An exposure can occur during sexual activity, sharing of needles, or occupational if working in a facility that handles the virus.
