The Colorado River Compact allocates 1.8% of the river’s water to Nevada. Renegotiating may not actually increase our allotment and would require approval from Congress and new agreements from all seven states that share the river, likely resulting in decades of litigation.

To prevent this, the SNWA is pursuing more timely partnerships to ensure efficient use of Colorado River water.

For example, we are currently exploring a partnership with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California in which we would invest in a large-scale water recycling program. In return, Southern Nevada would be able to access additional water supplies of California’s share of the Colorado River.
