Just a video I put together very quickly about something I have noticed a few times, that after a light rain larger soil clumps have a drier surface than small grains of soil. My hypothesis is that capillary action distributes that water which fell on the surface of the large clumps throughout the clump, but that can’t work between clumps so the smaller grains has a much smaller volume for that water to go. I did not have time to think a lot about what I was going to say or script this out as once I noticed it I wanted to get the video filmed before the next rain shower came through (which the photo at the end is after).
