McLaren-Mercedes looked very strong in the first two phases of F1 sprint qualifying in Miami - on medium Pirellis - but when the top ten switched to softs for the final blast it was Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen who again rose to the top with a beautifully-sculpted lap. Lando Norris, who had dominated Q2, qualified only P9, his only consolation being the thought that his fastest lap in Q2 would have put him on the pole had he reproduced it only a few minutes later. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified an excellent P2 after losing all of the morning session due to a spin, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez and a very impressive Daniel Ricciardo, who recovered from a wall-glancing moment in Q2 to prove the worth of the updated Visa Cash App-Honda. Neither factory Mercedes, by contrast, made it through to Q3.
