The game is characterized by its graphic style, inspired by the cartoons of the 30s, based on the cartoons of Fleischer Studios and Walt Disney Animation from Canada, seeking to emulate their subversive and surreal qualities. The story is about two brothers, the protagonist Cuphead and Mugman, who must defeat various creatures in order to pay off a debt they have pending with the devil.

Cuphead was a critical and commercial success. It was praised for its striking visual style and challenging difficulty, selling around two million copies by the end of 2017.

.:.:. History

Cuphead and Mugman were two brothers who lived together under the supervision of their grandfather, The Elder Kettle. One day they entered the Devil's casino, which was run by King Dice. Since they win many games, El Diablo tells them that if they win one last round they will become owners of the casino or else he will take over their souls. Cuphead, blinded by ambition, accepted the challenge and lost. The brothers begged the Devil not to take their souls and he proposed that if they take the contracts of their debtors to the Devil, they will keep them.

After having gone through countless adventures, they reach the Devil's Cavern, where they face King Dice's lackeys. After defeating them, El Diablo asks them if they want to join his team. By accepting, both brothers will be turned into their evil versions. By refusing, it is the Devil himself who challenges the characters to another duel.

By defeating him Cuphead and Mugman burn all the soul contracts, thus all the inhabitants of Inkwell Island come back to life and Cuphead and Mugman become the new heroes of the place.

.:.:. Development

Cuphead is the first video game by brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, with additional animation work done by Jake Clark. Its development began in 2010 and they worked on the game from their respective homes in Toronto and Saskatchewan, Canada, and also had to mortgage those homes in order to finish it.

The Cuphead character design was taken from a 1936 Japanese animated film called Evil Mickey Attacks Japan. In this movie, a fat man with a cup-shaped head is transformed into a war tank.
