This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2022 Toyota GR86, formally the Scion FRS. The Toyota GR86 is the cousin to the Subaru BRZ, a co-developed platform between Toyota and Subaru. This sports car is powered by a 2.4L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque; 23 more horsepower than the previous model. It comes with a standard 6-speed manual and optional 6-speed automatic transmission. RWD only. The bigger engine has improved 0-60 times from 7.0 to 6.1 seconds for the manual and from 8.0 to 6.6 seconds for the automatic. 0-100 km/h is now 6.4 seconds for the MT and 6.9 seconds for AT. Toyota engineered this car to have almost 18% more horsepower and 11% torque and tuned it so the peak torque arrives earlier at 3700 RPM versus 6600 RPM on the previous model making it more responsive. It has a double wishbone style multi-link rear suspension and active rear sport differential for improved traction while cornering making this a blast to drive. The GR86 remains the same size for this model year with room for four passengers although the second row is tiny. To reduce weight, Toyota added an aluminum roof, front fenders and lightweight front seat frames making it one of the lightest sports cars on the market. The interior remains simple with the focus being on the drive. An 8” touchscreen replaces the 7” screen and it now comes with a 7” digital gauge display with normal, sport and track modes. The base trim has cloth seats and a 6-speaker stereo system; the top trim gets 8-speakers and Alcantara with leather trimmed seats. The GR86 has wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front seats and a manual driver and passenger seat. More safety features are available for 2022, but only with the automatic transmission, they include, full speed radar-cruise, pre-collision system, lane departure warning, sway warning and lead vehicle start alert. Blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert is standard on the top trim.
The GR86 MT starts at $31,490 CAD/$27,700 USD, AT $33,890 CAD/$29,200 USD, Premium MT $34,490 CAD/$30,300 USD and Premium AT $36,890 CAD/$31,800 USD

Competitors to the Toyota GR86 include the Subaru BRZ, Nissan 400Z, Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Volkswagen GTI.
