Does democracy either uniquely promote individual liberty, or is itself a kind of liberty? Here in a discussion of chapter 8 and 9 of Jason Brennan's Democracy: A Guided Tour we consider these questions. We look at Rousseau, Constant, and Berlin for arguments to the effect that democracy promotes or is a kind of freedom, then consider some arguments that democracy actually in effect limits our freedom, and even works against it. Authors considered there included Hume, Spooner, Schmitt, and Nozick.
