Speaker: Sheikh Zahir Mahmood

Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah) told a story of a man walking in the jungle until a roaring lion started to chase him and the man ran as fast as he could to escape from it. He noticed a well in front of him and he jumped inside the well, hoping to escape from the lion.
Inside the well, he managed to grab onto a rope. The man was so relieved but when he looked down at the bottom of the well, he saw an enormous snake with its jaws wide open ready to swallow him up.

The man looked up and saw that the lion was still trying to get him from outside the well. Just then, two mouse - one black mouse and one white mouse - appeared and started to chew on the rope that the man is holding on to.

The man is desperately trying to find a way to get out of this predicament. He noticed a honeycomb in front of him, which has delicious honey dripping from it. He stuck his finger to get the honey and he takes the honey that is on his finger and places it upon his tongue. The sweetness of the honey momentarily makes him forget about the lion, the snake and even the two mice.

Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah) explained that the lion is like death which is always chasing us. The snake is like the grave into which every person will fall. The rope is like a person's life. The white mouse and the black mouse are like the day and the night respectively, which are always eating away at our life (i.e. the rope). The honey is like this dunya and with its momentary sweetness, it makes us forget about our death, about our grave and about a Day which will come and we will have to stand before our Creator to answer for all we have done in this Dunya.

May Allah make us among those who are successful in Hereafter. Ameen
