I am posting this video on September 30, 2020. One day after our President debated a former Vice President on national TV just weeks before an election. President Johnson spoke to the nation in 1967 in the midst of rioting in many of America's cities that was far worse than anything we have seen in recent months. I present this statement as food for thought. To see how a former president addressed the nation and what he was trying to accomplish. Like many Americans, I was disappointed by the debate last night and somewhat embarrassed for my country that the world saw our candidates behaving in a fashion that in my personal opinion, shamed us. Whether or not you agree with my assessment, listening to President Johnson that night as I did, I felt that he was trying to bring the country together to survive through a difficult time. At that time, like now, where we have the virus and a struggling economy and a very fractured country, we had the Vietnam War and so much disagreement about the state of the country. To me, watching something historical like this helps to evaluate what we are living through.
