If your BMW is making a grinding noise when you accelerate, the culprit is likely the parking brake cable retainer clip. The stock BMW clip is made out of plastic and becomes brittle with age. Over time, the pieces that hold the cables in place will snap off, allowing the cables to hang down and touch the driveshaft. At first, you will only hear it under hard acceleration, but eventually you’ll hear a constant grinding sound as the cables droop down.

Thankfully, a company called AGA tools developed an all aluminum replacement which should last the life of the car. In this video, I’ll show you step by step how to install it! The install is do-able, but requires crawling under your car and working in a frustratingly tight space. If you can do it yourself though, you’ll save a ton of money. On the forums, I’ve read posts of people being quoted as much as $1,300 for this job.
