► BORN 198 YEARS AGO: Princess Alexandra of Bavaria (26 August 1826 – 21 September 1875), the princess who thought she was made of glass. Her portrait painting made photo realistic, modernized and animated.
Princess Alexandra of Bavaria, born in 1826, was the daughter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, known for commissioning the Gallery of Beauties. Alexandra was highly intelligent and devoted to literature, contributing stories, essays, and translations. However, she was also known for her psychological eccentricities, including an obsession with cleanliness, leading her to wear only white. Her most peculiar belief was that she had swallowed a grand piano made entirely of glass as a child. Convinced that this fragile instrument resided intact within her, Alexandra moved cautiously, tiptoeing through corridors, to avoid "shattering" the imaginary piano. This delusion is part of a broader historical phenomenon known as "the glass delusion," affecting various royals and nobles, including King Charles VI of France, who believed his body was made of glass. Despite her unusual beliefs, Alexandra's literary contributions remain notable. She passed away in 1875 at the age of 49.
