HVAC thermostats vary from super basic non-programmable to programmable, phone controlled thermostats loaded with various features. But at their core, a thermostat is actually just a few switches in a box that automatically turn on and off. In this video I show how a thermostat would look like if all the bells and whistles would be removed, along with all the temperature controls. Essentially what you would have left is just a few switches. The set up I show is only for standard heating and air conditioning units. The wiring would be different for two stage units, heat pumps, and communicating systems.
