The 2017 Acura NSX was a very different kind of NSX — whereas the first one was an exercise in Honda's legendary simplicity and lightweight engineering; the second one was... not.

Heavy and complicated, engineered with turbos and hybrid motors and torque-vectoring and brake-by-wire and an automatic transmission, the new NSX removes the driver from the equation. But does it remove the fun-factor, too?

I went on the press launch at Sonoma Raceway and in the hills of Northern California. And came away with some pretty controversial opinions.

Unlike other cars, the NSX's fundamental driving experience is changed in different Driving Modes — but this car didn't have the right one. I still maintain that it was a product of decisions made by folks who didn't fully understand the audience for a supercar.

And the sales numbers (or lack thereof) backed that up. A strange misstep, I think, for a company that so often pulls off incredible engineering feats.
