With the new pitch clock rules (yea those pitch clock words again), part of the rule implemented is pitchers are limited to two disengagements (pickoff attempts or step offs) per plate appearance. From the get-go, you can see Cobb try to go over the strategy in his mind about how to deal with Rowdy Tellez. Giants’ catcher Joey Bart notices this and quickly indicates he is taking a mound visit. So the home plate umpire throws up his hands signaling time out and then he does one of those cock your head in thinking moments where he’s like “I hope nobody caught that”. Fast forward to 2-0, Cobb will check on the runner at 1st and the first base umpire throws up “2”. Right after that pickoff attempt, Cobb throws to first again and the first base umpire signals “3” and sends the runner to second via a balk. Rackley would approach Riggs the first base umpire telling him apparently the mound visit cancelled out the first disengagement. Counsell comes out and goes kind of crazy.
