The Bijou cinema in Southport has become a staple part of the community, despite people saying “it’ll never happen”.
The cinema was the creation of Michael Lockwood, the previous manager. It was his “dream and goal in life” to open a cinema, as he was a huge film fan.
In fact, the name ‘Bijou’ was inspired by the cinema shown in the 1946 classic It’s A Wonderful Life, which happened to be one of Michael’s favourite films.
Michael spent years working on the cinema, initially making groundwork in 2009. Current manager Andy Harrison came on board in 2016, and the Bijou opened its doors in October 2019.
Andy explained: “Back before I joined the team, people would talk about it and say, ‘There’s meant to be a cinema coming, but it’ll never happen.’ [Michael] was keen to spread the word. I said, ‘Right, we’re setting a date, and that’s the date we’re opening’.”
