As humanity needed more oil, because USA baby, instead of doing the normal thing and sending a drill line down there and maintaining a crew on the surface, humans would be sent over six miles below the surface of the waves to man Kepler station. As they were down there, they would drill in a hydrothermal pocket that would release creatures that were much more intelligent than average. Hunting humanity who is ill equipped for dealing with the bottom of the ocean, it would be discovered that there were more issues than just the 14 foot tall monsters picking off the crew.
