Synopsis:
Kalani (Joi Campbell), is a teenager living in Harlem with her older brother Jacob, and her younger sister, Bebe, while her mother struggles to make ends meet. Her college counselor Mr. Rose (Danny Glover) sees great promise in her educational future. As Kalani's siblings get caught in a myriad of hardships, Kalani teeters on the brink of ruin as she struggles to keep both her family and her dream intact. Strive reminds us that hard work, optimism, and perseverance, in the face of overwhelming adversity, is the essence of what it is to be American.

"It's an inspirational drama full of recognizable emotional tricks. It's to its credit that it comes off so honest and vulnerable though, and it never succumbs to mere sentimentalism or exploitation.

A particularly powerful element of the film is the spiritual undertones, exploring what it is to reconcile God with the notion of suffering. Where is God and why is God silent is a phrase that gets reframed by the questions what and where can I look to discover God within and even through my hardships and my experiences. These are two very different postures, one born from honesty and lament and the other born from hopeful expectation. Both bear out equally powerful parts of the human and spiritual experience."
