Exploring Waimea Canyon via the Kukui Trail | Hiking Kauai

Waimea Canyon is known to be the Grand Canyon of the pacific. The road that drives through the Kokee State Park is very popular amongst tourists and locals alike. The state park is also home to tons of hikes in a wide range of difficulty.

Kukui trail is a hike that is a bit more difficult and is definitely a longer hike. We'd suggest making a day out of this hike and have a picnic with a swim at the bottom. It is a total of 6 miles with 2,346 ft of elevation. It took us a total of 4 hours but 3:30 of that was moving time and a whole half-hour of relaxing.

Throughout most of the hike, you have spectacular canyon views and you might see some mountain goats! Once you get back into the jungle, towards the bottom, you'll see some amazing plants and then eventually get to the destination which is the Waimea River.

While hiking, we passed many other people who did not go all the way to the bottom. While that is a viable option, we'd suggest taking the time to get down to the river for it is just as spectacular and fun to explore.

We hope you think to include this marvelous hike in your next Kauai visit, it is worth it!
