Fishing disputes arising from competing sovereignty claims over various features in the South China sea have stoked tensions between littoral states in the Asian region. It has also posed a serious challenge to maritime security. Fishermen from countries like the Philippines and Vietnam are now facing continuous struggle to defend their rights to fish in one of the world’s richest fishing grounds. This comes after China begins to assert its control over the waterway and all the resources beneath it.
