We continue to archive the fantastic Metal Gear Solid games and today we archive the very first I ever played. Many people either love or hate MGS2, but I remember there being an unreal amount of hype leading up to this game's release. I must have played the demo to this game dozens of times and it was one of the most technical breathtaking games of that year.
The first hour or so of the game is pretty much perfect since the Tanker section offers a very fun playground where you can experiment with some of the new features like first person aiming or all the new physics.
The big twist that no one saw coming in that day and age was that for the most part we would not be playing as Snake, but instead as Raiden. Now Raiden is nowhere near as cool as Solid Snake, but I always was glad that Snake still had a big role to play in the story and the cutscenes.
Though I also really like MGS2, I think this might be my least favorite of the main line games, since it has some pacing issues. There is a section where you have to backtrack and find several bombs to diffuse, which is not that exciting and takes quite a while.
It also get a bit muddled towards the end with its story, but the final section where you fight alongside Snake himself is very epic. There are also a lot of storybeats that hit me in the feels and overall I loved the nostalgia it gave me to revisit this title after so many years. And we have saved the best for last, because we have one more game to go...Metal Gear Solid 4, baby!
