Like most of you, I love fast food hamburgers. Beany’s drive through was an early fast food drive in and drive out restaurant in Long Beach, California. This silent home movie film was recorded in 1953. Beany’s sold burgers for $0.20 with an extra cheese for $0.10. I always got the burgers with cheese. Coke or coffee – $0.10

I love and loved fast food. And to be delivered in your automobile back then felt just wonderful. Like you were special.

The McDonald's Brothers started their burger joints at about the same time in San Bernardino, California. While fast-food restaurants had been around since the 1920s, drive-thru dining came of age in car-crazy California in the 1950s. By the 1970s, major fast-food franchises nationwide began to install drive-thru windows. With increases in single-parent households, after-school activities, and commute times, fast food that you could order and eat without leaving your car became commonplace. By 2014, one study estimated that 20 percent of all meals in the United States were eaten in a car.

The music that I have placed with this 16mm film was made by a dear old friend of mine and a very talented musician, Ellen Starr.

I made this clip to give my subscribers and others just a bit of the feeling one got when driving up and getting good food without ever getting out of your automobile. Some of the scenes in the film where you can see the workers behind the glass windows making the food indicate just how fast they worked. And how much fun it was for all involved. And I never get tired of seeing cars from the 1950s, especially the souped up ones.
