In the Medieval world you had to look like Royalty; it was part of the deal. That meant that you, your clothes, your jewellery, your homes and everything in them had to look the part.

Medieval people spoke the language of wealth in a far more sophisticated way than us and so they could see what we cannot, in the fabrics and the colours and spices and the precious stones and even the cut of your clothes.

But this whole aspect of life is utterly overlooked in TV and film and so castles are perceived to be for fighting, for war. But of course they were being used for giving the right impression every day and only occasionally for war, so in fact their role has been largely misinterpreted by Hollywood.

This just gives a slight look at the castle as a royal house.

Many thanks to Dover Castle and English Heritage for letting me film here.
