Last year we saw the introduction of an all new Mercedes SL with two 4.0L bi-turbo engine options - there’s the SL 53 with 470-hp and the big brother SL 63 with 577-hp.

Now, Mercedes has released the SL 43 and there’s no V8 here. The SL 43 is powered by a 4 cylinder with some F1 exhaust turbo technology.

In this video, I’m going to show you how you can tell the little brother apart visually from its V8 siblings.

I’m also going to show you just how similar this design is to the Porsche 911. It's really interesting to see the similarities when you break down the cars into simple shapes and volumes.

Powering the base SL is a new variant of AMG’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder and it actually has less power than the Mercedes AMG A45 S hatchback. The hatch puts out 416 hp while the SL 43 only gets 375 hp.

The good news is that it’s still a quick car and it gets a lot better fuel economy with the smaller engine. It’s connected to a 9-speed automatic driving the rear wheels only and 0-60mph takes 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 171 mph. The 43 also gets around 25.0-26.4 mpg so maybe it isn’t such a bad deal after all.

It’s not entirely clear whether the SL 43 will make it to the US since the majority of the SL sales here would most likely be the V8 versions.

If none of the new SLs are powerful enough for you, don’t worry. In addition to the SL 43, 53 and 63, Mercedes is currently working on the monster SL called the SL63 E-Performance.

This will be the top of the line SL with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 connected with an electric motor making 831 hp and 1,023 lb-ft of torque.
