Weekly Economic Outlook: What you ought to be really worried about - a tour d'horizon with the CSFI's former Director, Andrew Hilton

Why you should watch: No surprise that Ukraine looms large. Aside from the humanitarian crisis, Russia's invasion is another nail in the coffin of hyper-efficient globalisation - and another boost to inflation, which was already heading to double digits in many advanced economies. It may well also tip the global economy back into recession - though evidence on that is mixed. And, of course, it could be the 'exogenous event' that finally bursts the global equities boom - though, so far, the best advice seems to be 'buy the dip'. Other worries: India, where Modi must be feeling his oats, China, whose reliance on a zero-Covid strategy belies reason, and the JCPOA talks in Vienna. A lot to chew on.

Andrew Hilton stepped down as director of the CSFI at the beginning of March, after 29 years. Phew. However, he is still alive (and open to offers). He is a former journalist (with the FT in New York), a former World Bank economist and project officer (in Washington) and a former economic consultant (in Athens and London). He was educated at Oxford (inevitably, PPE) and Penn/Wharton (MA, MBA and PhD). Pre-GFC, he got an OBE; since then, nothing.
