(20 Nov 1958) The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester arrived in Addis Ababa and were welcomed by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess. After the warm exchange of greetings, the Guard of Honour, mounted by troops of the Imperial Army, was inspected. Soon after their arrival, the Duke and Duchess drove to the Imperial Palace and were received by their host, the Empress, and members of their family and court. The Duke presented a letter from the Queen expressing her admiration for Ethiopia's progress. The Duke and Duchess were residing at the Jubilee Palace, an impressive building maintained for the use of distinguished visitors to the country. The State programme opened with a reception and banquet, given by the Emperor. The British Ambassador, Mr Geoffrey Furlonge, and his wife were among the many British and Ethiopian guests.
