Daniel Joachim Kleiven is a philosopher and economist with a fondness for Aristotle and St. Thomas who we found through a recent IAI article entitled “The Laws of Nature Explain Very Little.” In it, Joachim makes an argument that mathematics are a poor substitute for true understanding, and so cannot be considered ground truth of the universe. We discuss the philosophical path that brought him to this realization, the long history of people agonizing over this question, and what he suggests we replace mathematics with.
