Do you have a swarm trap in your apiary as insurance? Do you use it throughout the year to help the hives you have established? We do. You might be missing out on one of the greatest tools you can use!
Swarm traps shouldn't be limited to making new hives. They can be made to make new bee hives but if you catch swarms in your apiary it can be tricky to add to a new hive without moving 3 miles away, then back a few days later.
We stopped this practice once we realized how ridiculous it was. Leaving the swarm up in the tree and using the swarm for resources is a better way to keep your hive healthy and productive.
It is not very hard on the swarm in the tree if you take a frame or three. They need room to build and room to lay more eggs. Taking from the swarm trap is a perfect swarm control and helps your apiary. Watchin in this video how we help a nucleus hive increase their numbers and normalize them after winter.
