The “Rent-a-Racer” program provided by Shelby and Hertz was a promotional idea to get the Shelby Mustang in the hands of car enthusiasts to really show off the cars potential. It worked, almost too well!! The stories are still rampant about cars being rented on Friday, having their engines used in personal race cars, the Shelby’s themselves having full roll cages installed for the weekend for racing, and people replacing the Hi-Po Shelby engine for a generic Ford 289 4 barrel and returning it to Hertz!!!

This 1966 Shelby GT350H was shipped to S & C Motors Inc. in San Francisco, California in May of 1966 to be prepared prior to delivery to Hertz. This new Shelby was invoiced to Hertz for $3,547 plus $105.55 for chrome Magnum wheels, $45.45 for Radio, $20 pre-delivery charge and $141.75 for freight for a grand total of $3,859.75. By 1967, its time was done in the rental fleet and it was sold to its first private owner who lived in California. It changed hands a few more times after that all while remaining in the state where it was sold new. Under previous ownership, it underwent a rotisserie restoration finished in its original color combination of Black with Gold stripes. The engine was removed and sent out to rebuilt during the restoration and the transmission was upgraded to a 4 speed. The engine compartment is detailed nicely with correct decals and paint finishes. The undercarriage is finished in red oxide primer with color overspray and inspection markings. Documenting this beautiful Hertz Shelby includes SAAC serial number verification, Shelby invoices, restoration receipts, registration documents, owner’s manual, as well as being listed in the Shelby registry.

This Shelby is a great example of the rare and unique Rent a Racer version of the famous GT350H. From a $17/day rental to a desirable collector car, great history, special features and Shelby pedigree make this a great GT350H for the discerning collector or Shelby Enthusiast.
