The audio recording is real and you know it when you hear it. The filmmaker got the chance to put some footage to it which was also actually recorded during basic training. I collected this film 37 years ago when I was creating a television special on the U.S. Army with Army support. I don't know the name of the filmmaker and I certainly would have loved to have seen more of this film as the audio track is so powerful in its authenticity.

I have filmed Army basic training on four different occasions myself but as soon as I showed up with my camera and soundman colleague, the language that cleared up and some of the dumber or should I say tougher language in this short film clip wasn't done.

Many of you watching this went through basic training. And have your own memories of how you were trained to become a soldier, a fighter willing to kill and to put your life at risk of being killed. I have pretty severe asthma and was rejected by the Army during the Vietnam War and the draft. But several of my cousins enlisted and described basic training as something they were proud to have gone through. One of my wife's relatives, a pretty angry young guy, punched an officer during basic training and after he got out of the brig, the military gave him a dishonorable discharge.

I realize that this is just clip, only three minutes long, but it does give you the feeling for how back in 1971, during the Vietnam War, the military trained draftees to go to war in Southeast Asia.
