Can you make money with exchange traded funds? Let's look at the ten most popular Australian ETFs to see the gains you would have made over the past three years.

The reason I’ll be sticking to the ten most popular is that these are the ETFs that most people tend to buy into (clearly since they have the highest market capitalisation right now).

I’ll also show you where you can find performance data on all the ETF’s currently listed on the ASX, but for now, let’s look at the top 10 largest ETFs.

These ETFs were a mix of both Australian based companies that followed an index like the ASX200, but there were some global based funds as well, including one that followed the S&P500.

The returns, particularly those that followed an index, closely followed the market as a whole.

The Australian sharemarket has typically (based on past historical performance) averaged per annum 8-10%, not including dividends.
