All month long, WBLS along with our sister station HOT will be celebrating young professionals that are making Black History today.

Bonsu Thompson is a writer, producer, director and self proclaimed cultural engineer who has a successful body of work as former editor-in-chief of The Source, senior writer at SLAM, directing the series Iconic Records: Life After Death and much more.

The Brooklyn native drew inspiration from hearing artists such as Eric B & Rakim at block parties when he was younger.

At 4-years-old he wrote a book replicating what he was used to reading at the time, but gave him the foundation of his career in the future.

"When it's your time, it's your time."

He wrote a script to a film named Story Ave. which was the #1 independent film at the time of release in 2023, and is now nominated for an NAACP Image Award. The film, based on a true story, follows Kadir Grayson, a teenage graffiti artist who ran away from home and commits a robber that ends up changing his life.

Thompson also worked on telling Notorious B.I.G.'s story in Iconic Records: Life After Death and 2017's Can't Stop Won't Stop: A Bad Boy Story.

His current podcast HARD 2 EARN reviews albums track by track in both the world of hip hop and R&B.
