The BIS was created in 1930. It is owned by 63 central banks and monetary authorities from across the world. Together, these countries account for about 95% of the global economy.

Our headquarters is in Basel, Switzerland and we have representative offices in Hong Kong SAR and in Mexico City.

We also have Innovation Hub Centres around the world.

Our mission is to support central banks’ pursuit of monetary and financial stability and act as a bank for central banks.

To pursue this mission, we provide central banks with:
- a forum for dialogue and broad international cooperation
- a platform for responsible innovation and knowledge-sharing
- analysis and insights on core policy issues

All this helps them to navigate the opportunities and challenges they face.

We also act as a bank for central banks.
Here, we offer financial services to central banks, monetary authorities and international organisations, mainly to help them in managing their foreign exchange assets.

The BIS is a diverse organisation. We currently employ over 600 staff members from more than 60 countries.

Our staff have expertise in finance, banking, risk management, law, economics, statistics, technology and cyber security, communication, human resources, and much more...!

We’re present across the world, currently in nine locations.
