You might be forgiven for thinking most SUVs can cut it off road, however, a surprising proportion would struggle to pull themselves out of a slightly muddy field, because most are either front-wheel drive or have four-wheel drive systems that only work some of the time. The Subaru XV has a full-time four-wheel drive system that makes it remarkably agile, in conditions that would quite literally leave rivals in its tracks.
But agility is not the only thing that defines the Subaru XV. Its economical, as it’s offered with an engine that uses hybrid technology with the aim of boosting performance and helping fuel economy. It’s also safe – even by the standards of some newer rivals. It scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, and features as standard a set of driver-assistance features that includes adaptive cruise control, active lane-departure and blind spot monitoring as well as automatic emergency braking in a package called Eyesight. Even now there aren't many rivals that have all of these systems as standard. So, the Subaru XV certainly has some appealing qualities, but is it a match for the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Seat Ateca, Ford Puma and the Skoda Karoq for example?
High-spec XV models get leather upholstery and sporty front seats that are actually comfortable. Space up front is good and you won’t struggle for headroom even if you’re on the tall side. Move to the back seats and there’s a good amount of legroom and a decent amount of space above your head, too, provided your passengers aren’t much taller than six feet.
So, if you’re looking for a very safe, compact SUV that’s actually capable off-road, there are hardly any better choices. The Subaru XV has a RRP range of £33,290 to £35,290.
