I was able to walk into History when I visited the Slave castle of Elmina in Ghana.

I have been doing a lot of independent research lately...I know a lot of you have been doing the same.

I’m still excited to celebrate the 4th of July, Independence Day, when the US gained its independence from Great Britain. (No shade on my Brits! I had fun celebrating Valentine’s Weekend with you!)
But did you know that in 1776, Black people were not free, nor included in the celebration?

It would be almost another 100 years until the slaves were liberated. Sobering.

That brings us to today, Juneteenth!

157 years ago (1863), black people became free in America, but for two years, many slaves did not know this. They were not told. They could not read (because it was against the law for them to learn to do so) and so they continued their lives in servitude.

But On June 1865 (155 yrs ago), A Union soldier, by the name of Gordon Granger went in person to deliver/enforce the orders of emancipation. Arriving on Plantations he spoke to the slaves who were unaware that they had been emancipated and to the slave owners who had refused to tell them or let them go.

The word began to spread...slaves began to exit and by the 19th of June, all were liberated. Although Some learned of their freedom on the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th...Juneteenth covers them all!

Understanding this shows me that it is possible to be granted something here on earth or in Heaven above, and still not benefit from what has been given.

First you have to hear about it, second it has to be received, the third is (the hardest, and where most opposition lies)...it has to be acted upon, over and over again, until it has become the new normal for all.

Several years ago, I was blessed to travel to Ghana where I was able to see history first hand. I was able to explore it with my daughter, my mom, sisters, and a band full of brothers. I saw and learned so much.

I am forever changed. Freedom is worth the struggle, worth holding on to, worth sharing, worth celebrating!

The Lord is good y’all! He whom the Son sets free, is FREE indeed!

In that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty,
‘I will break the yoke off their necks
and will tear off their bonds;
no longer will foreigners enslave them.
Jeremiah 30:8

Happy Juneteenth!!! Freedom Day

Grace and peace y’all
