If you notice that your pool water is not as clear as it used to be, it may be time to clean your filter. This this process is called backwashing your pool filter. Backwashing is a necessary part of both sand filter and D.E. filter maintenance. Doing it the correct way will save you time, money, and possible damage to your pool equipment. This will work on Hayward sand filters as well as Jandy sand filters and others.

In order to check if our pool filter needs to be backwashed, we take a look at the pressure gauge. On the gauge there's a mark that shows normal pressure, which is usually around 10 psi, or pounds per square inch.

If the pressure gauge needle is 10 psi over this point, then it is time to clean your pool sand filter. Backwashing your sand filter will get it back to its cleaning power so you can get back to swimming. So the first thing we do is roll out our backwash hose in a safe location. Your pool sand filter might already been hard-plumbed into the sewer.

1. Turn your pump motor OFF. If you don't have a switch on the timer, you can turn the breaker off.
2. Turn the multiport valve to the “BACKWASH” setting.
3. Turn your pump motor ON and let the filter perform the backwash cycle for about 3-5 minutes, or until the water runs clear out of the backwash hose or the sight glass.
4. Turn your pump motor OFF and turn the multiport valve to the “RINSE” setting. This setting will rinse the lines of any residual debris or sand that's in the line.
5. Turn the motor back ON and rinse for about 10 seconds.
6. Turn pump motor OFF and turn the multiport valve back to the “FILTER” setting.
7. Roll up the backwash hose and your finished.

If you need to, turn the filter back on. And now you know how to easily backwash your pool sand filter.
