I distinctly recall hearing this for the first time back in the 80s and immediately realising that Steve Vai had sensationally used but one fret to create an amazingly melodic and catchy little guitar solo.
I've ripped off this idea many times over the years - and more broadly - the idea of setting limits before attempting to create something.
* Using only one string
* Playing only up strokes
* Excluding certain strings
* Hammering every third note
and so on...
