If your D&D players always know what to expect, then the sessions will get boring. Your job, as the DM, is to provide enough variety in the encounters to ensure the players never quite know what to expect.

This will include not only changing the nature of the encounters, but also mixing up the difficulty. Let's look at some guidelines for how you can mix up your D&D encounter difficulty.
