Shawn Henderson, who grew up in the upstate New York area, knew immediately that the eyebrow colonial was meant for him. Built in the 1830s and relocated to another part of the property in the 1980s, the house has seen many transformations. After a fire in 2017, Henderson was presented with an opportunity to add additional square footage and he ended up extending the kitchen space and added a screened-in-porch and a master suite. Despite the expansion, Henderson is careful to maintain a feeling of “warmth, comfort, and security” for everyone who visits—great hospitality runs in his family. “It actually feels like a hug,” says Henderson, of the guest bedroom with green Loro Piana upholstered walls and Fortuny drapes, but “things aren’t too precious.” He describes the decor of the home as “Americana meets Swedish country,” and in the 18 years he’s lived there, he has filled the space with an interesting juxtaposition of pieces—think Scandinavian furniture mixed with a Noguchi paper lantern in his living room—that prevent the home from feeling too “old and stodgy.”
