The Pace Report: "Salsa Revisited" Spanish Harlem Orchestra with Oscar Hernandez Interview
Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report reporting live from the 2023 Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.

For over 20 years the Spanish Harlem Orchestra has been a non-stop touring band that has kept the legacy of Latin music alive. Founded by Aaron Levinson and Oscar Hernandez. The mission of the SHO has been to be a leader of the New York style Salsa music that was popular during the 1950s and 1960s.

Oscar Hernandez, a Bronx native, grew up listening to the many Latin music styles. He began playing professionally around 16 and eventually played with the likes of Tito Puente, Rueben Blades, Pete Rodriguez, Ray Barretto, and Paul Simon. Taking the lessons and musical styles from his former bandleaders, Hernandez has lead the SHO as the music director winning three Grammys.

In this edition of The Pace Report, Oscar discusses the origins of Salsa and other forms of Latin music, how the Latin bands have diminished due to economics and lack of venues, and how Salsa has been important to the legacy of the the past bandleaders.
