On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, after a cautious start with some incredible underwaters, Léon Marchand became world champion in the 200 m butterfly, beating his best time by almost a second (new French record of 1'52.43). Polish revelation Chmielevski was second, but a very distant second behind the Frenchman, and Tomoru Honda, pre-race favorite, only 3rd.
