Repairing plaster gouges, divots and pockmarks is a tricky task for most DIYers. In this video, The Honest Carpenter teams up with Philip Lamachio, a plaster repair expert, to show you how to carry out the FASTEST PLASTER REPAIR EVER!! It's just a 30-minute fix for you damaged plaster walls...

Plaster walls are prone to developing gouges, divots and pockmarks. This is because plaster is frangible--it fractures easily.

In many cases, these damages can be repaired using nothing more that quick-setting drywall mud! Be sure to check out our video where we discuss the benefits of quick-set mud over drywall bucket mud:

How-To:
FASTEST PLASTER REPAIR EVER!! (30-MINUTE FIX: Plaster Gouges, Divots, Pockmarks!)
1) Mix quick-setting drywall joint compound to a consistency about like ice cream. (This is thicker than the usual peanut butter consistency--be sure to use less water. BUT, this will help fill plaster gouges, divots, pockmarks)
2) Trowel mixed compound completely into divots and gouges on plaster wall. Be sure to hit divots and gouges from two opposite directions. This will force compound into all corners of the divot. Try not to leave high ridge lines or scrape marks!
3) Make sure plaster gouges, divots and pockmarks are fully filled in on first coat
4) Clean out mud pan / clean off drywall and plaster tools
5) Mix second batch of quick-setting drywall compound in mud pan. This is going to be a topping coat, so you want it to be lighter. A consistency about like yogurt is desired.
6) Trowel second topping coat onto repaired divots, gouges, pockmarks on plaster wall. Fan out repair patch so it is larger this time. Be sure to feather edges to make smooth transition to the wall. Try not to leave high ridge lines or scrape marks!
7) Dry the area with a heat gun. But BE CAREFUL! Heat guns can reach 1100 degrees. Keep the heat gun a few inches away from the wall, keep the tip moving. Don't scorch the repair or the paint underneath
8) When the area is dry, lightly sand with 120 or 150 grit sandpaper. Use gentle sweeping motions. Focus on the perimeter of the patch. Create a smooth transition to the existing wall.

That's how you carry out the fastest plaster repair ever! A 30-minute fix is all you need to for most plaster gouges, divots and pockmarks.
