On most all vehicles, if you see the PRND display fully boxed out then that's an indication of a TCM fault. Usually some form of no communication as in this case. On the PT Cruiser, the TCM and the ECM are combined into the PCM. I can communicate just fine with the ECM and sometimes the TCM works but usually it doesn't.

It's always best to do some checks of the wiring diagram and TCM terminals before just calling a faulty module. Especially on one like this where it's so accessible.
