BRICS is a group of emerging economies, named for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
This October, BRICS will hold its 16th summit, and its first as an expanded grouping since 2010, with four new members. Meanwhile, more than 40 countries have expressed interest in joining the bloc. Thailand and Malaysia have made official applications towards becoming BRICS members. Yet, Indonesia has been hesitant, citing a need to further study the decision.
What explains the vastly different attitudes towards BRICS among these Southeast Asian nations? As BRICS discusses issues like de-dollarisation and Global South priorities, is the organisation shaping up to be a serious challenger to the American-led international order?
