One of the less discussed engagements of the Civil War occurred at Gaines' Mill, Va., on June 27, 1862. It is wedged towards the middle of the Seven Days Battles that culminated at Malvern Hill—the end of Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's failed Peninsula Campaign. The highlight of Gaines' Mill was an powerful attack by two Confederate brigades commanded by Col. Evander M. Law of Alabama and Brig. Gen. John Bell Hood of Texas.
