Rep. Donald Payne Jr., a native son of Newark's South Ward who carried the progressive banner through multiple elected positions before eventually succeeding his late father in Congress, died on Wednesday at the age of 65. Payne Jr. is remembered by political leaders around New Jersey as a humble public servant once worked as a toll booth worker among other jobs before entering politics.
