Heat and moisture are bad for attics. When you don’t have proper ventilation in your attic, it can also raise your utility bill. A simple and cost effective solution is to install a solar attic fan.

Here are the tools you’ll need:

reciprocating saw
caulk gun
sealant
pry bar
carpenter’s pencil or bright marker
screws

The roof openting needs to be 14 inches around. The best way to mark it is to make a 14 inch round template, set it over the hole and mark your circle. Then you’ll just cut along the mark.

Before you can install the fan, you need to put a bead of sealant around the underside of the flashing. That’s so it will adhere to the roof and give it a good seal so it won’t leak. Then you slide it underneath the shingles and over the moisture barrier and screw it into place. Also, put sealant under the shingles that you pry loose to seal them back into place, and seal the screws as well.

That’s all there is to it. Barring no major problems, it should take about an hour to install. Solar attic fans cost approximately $300-500, but the great thing about them is they’ll never cost you a dime in electricity because the sun provides all of the power.
