Isole (2023)
"Isole di suoni, separate dal vuoto del silenzio."
Per quartetto d'archi.

Brief Analysis:

The piece, "Isole", Italian word for "Islands", is a work for string quartet.

Its form consists in a Bridge-Structure, A B C B' A', in which every section of the work is divided from each other by moments of silence of different durations each, thus the subtitle "Isole di suoni, separate dal vuoto del silenzio", "Islands of sounds, separated by the emptiness of silence".

Each section contains a different number of panels, which depicts different acoustic situations, ranging from canons to chorale-like moments.
Every section is divided into specular A B A' structures, mimicking the specularity of the macro-structure inside the micro-structure.

The main material of the piece consists of the vertical superimposition of various intervals, ranging from the unison to the thirteenth, and the use of those same intervals horizontally to produce melodic movements.

Each section represents an elaboration on the concepts of canonic entries and chorale-writing, merging vertical harmonies and horizontal counterpoint lines, with the A and B sections being summarized in their parallels B' and A', and the C section acting as a big melting pot, summing all the other four sections.

"Isole" is a meditation, an observation on the ripples created by throwing pebbles in a lake, watching the ripples extend and vanish, while the water returns to stillness, and a game on the variety of biomes of different islands, which are yet united by the same basic DNA, in nature like in art.
