Stephen Knight’s moody atmospheric examination of Birmingham’s gang life between world wars has come to its sixth and final season and its brought with it the symbolism and attention to telling the story through set design. The gang of street fighters from the working class neighborhood of Small Heath has gone scrapping for the scraps of the horse betting to having a patriarch Thomas Shelby serving as an MP in Parliament. Regardless of holding public office, it turns out there’s no amount of legit the Shelby’s and the Peaky Blinders can’t seem to break free of the violence that brought them to power in the first place. For the last season a lot of those chickens are coming to roost for the first family of Birmingham some of their darkest sins are bound to revisit them. Horse imagery and color selection have been employed to outline and reinforce the story of the family that fought for it all only to find they could not stop fighting no matter how successful. There are playful easter eggs reflecting on the previous five seasons as well as playful ways that the people who make the show get themselves in it. The season looks back to create a sense of closure from the first shot to the final shot and setting up the promised feature length film that will bring the story from the end of World War I to World War II.
