Many political and economic comparisons are made between the U.S. and Brazil, citing them both as the largest democracies in the Western hemisphere. So, what does it mean when the U.S.-borne stereotype of the "welfare queen" finds its way into Brazilian discourse as a way to further marginalize Afro-Brazilian women? Dr. Gladys Mitchell-Walthour, the Dan Blue Endowed Chair of Political Science at NC Central University, joins host Prof. Mark Anthony Neal to discuss the collective political power of Afro-Brazilian women through her new book, "The Politics of Survival: Black Women Social Welfare Beneficiaries in Brazil and the United States," published by Columbia University Press.
