When our cows spend the night in the barn, they need to have some straw to keep them dry and comfortable. We purchased rotary chopped straw that has been perfect to bed with right out of the bale. This last bale was cut a little bit longer than we'd like to bed with so we decided to use our small bedding chopper to chop it a bit shorter. We use a gas-powered chopper, but there are electric ones out there too. After chopping the bedding, we quickly sweep the bedding up to the front of the stall. Alan gives a quick rundown of how the bedding chopper works. Lastly, our barn is quite old and the original stanchions are obviously showing wear and tear. While we save up money to hopefully put tie stalls in, we have to find temporary solutions. We made a makeshift tie stall that uses the stanchion frame.
